Welcome to my blog! My name is Ally and I am a seventh-grade teacher of English Language Arts in Massachusetts.  I am heading into my fourth year of teaching while simultaneously pursuing a M.Ed. in Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning.  Since completing my bachelor's degree I have been looking forward to returning to school as a student, and cannot wait to see how I grow as an educator in this program.
When I'm not teaching or planning lessons, I enjoy spending time in the gym or outdoors.  Creating a well-balanced lifestyle has always been a goal of mine, so I strive to stay both physically and mentally fit.  I also like to bake and try new recipes, to the benefit of my friends and family. Of course, as I am a millennial, my Netflix account also gets plenty of use. There's nothing like an episode of The Office after a long day of teaching.
I believe that as a teacher it is important to have a sense of humor but to also be thoughtful.  I look forward to sharing my thoughts on education as I work my way towards a better understanding of what it is to be a great teacher!

    There is honestly nothing better than coming home and replaying The Office on Netflix! Good self-care right there :)

    I absolutely love the office. I recently gave my co-worker jello with a stapler inside like Jim does to Dwight as a back to school gift. Sense of humor/thoughtful all in one gift!

In our two articles this week, we consider how the educational system is designed to keep Black students marginalized, even as other minority students exist and yet are ignored.  It is eye-opening to look at the efforts put into rationalizing discrimination against Black people while putting other minorities on a pedestal (or at least not putting in the effort to keep them down). Michael Dumas, author of “Against the Dark: Antiblackness in Education Policy and Discourse”, begins by discussing an issue of  National Geographic  that imagines a future where whites are no longer the majority. The magazine’s article, “ The Changing Face of America ” by Lise Funderburg, depicts people of mixed race, and suggests that in the future it will be difficult to discern a person’s racial and ethnic heritage just by looking at them. Ideologies of Oppression

In this week’s articles, our authors explored different facets of being White, and the responsibilities of dealing with Whiteness in regards to privilege and intelligence.    In her article “My Class Didn’t Trump My Race: Using Oppression to Face Privilege”, Robin DiAngelo describes her experience growing up poor and white, and how this impacted her worldview as she moved into academia. She explored some of the “patterns of internalized dominance” (54) that Whites often share, which she discovered while reflecting on her past experiences. One that struck me was the idea that Whites often pretend that race is not important. White people tend to conflate the noticing of race with racism itself, and conversely think that if we don’t see race, racism doesn’t exist. DiAngelo argues that “If we don’t notice racism, we can’t understand or interrupt it in ourselves or others” (56).  This brings about the point that colorblindness, as it is often called, is actually harmful.

Who Controls American Education?

Who controls American education? This is an important question posed by Joel Spring, author of the book American Education. In Chapter 8, “Local Control, Choice, Charter Schools, and Homeschooling”, Spring examines the variety of ways that people attempt to control the education of our youth. School choice is a major topic of conversation, particularly since the implementation of Common Core Standards. Proponents of school choice argue that, based on free-market economics, when parents have a choice of schools, the schools will need to improve in order to be more competitive. “Many supporters of religious schooling and free-market advocates support the public-private model of choice” (225). This is shown in the increase of private religious schools over the past hundred and fifty years.
